In his final briefing Cahill warned the assembled men that no unnecessary force was to be used during the heist. It was one of his idiosyncrasies. He would not tolerate violence against the victims of a robbery unless they ‘had a go’. ‘Fear is a calculated weapon but force is a sign of failure,’ he would reflect philosophically. Paradoxically, Cahill had little difficulty torturing or shooting anyone whom he even suspected of crossing him. Around nine o’clock the gang gathered in the Dropping Well pub in Milltown.
The Thomas O’Connor and Sons jewellery manufacturing plant in Harold’s Cross was an Aladdin’s cave of precious gems and had been a source of intense interest to both criminal and subversive 56/270 groups for years. The plant had been cased on a number of occasions with a view to liberating its multimillion pound contents. The IRA had abandoned plans for a robbery because they felt the hightech security system, which was directly linked to the Garda Metropolitan Headquarters in Dublin Castle, made the place impregnable.
With the cash from the robberies piling up, the Cahill gang began to look around for some kind of business through which to launder it. Eddie and Anthony decided that a pool hall was the perfect front. They gave the job of running the place to an associate, Seán Fitzgerald, an accomplished fraudster. ‘Fitzer’ was a gentleman crook who had no interest in violence or armed robbery. Smooth talk and charm were the tools of Fitzer’s trade. He had robbed banks all over the country armed with nothing more than a smile and a few dud cheques.
