Reversing the order in which the dyes are applied is a good test to see if and how the final color is affected. For instance, if I use a reasonable-strength yellow as the second color in an over-dye, the yellow will overpower most other colors. I achieve vastly different oranges depending upon whether I use red or yellow as the first color (see photos below). As you develop your practice, you may choose to mix favorite colors into a single bath. This makes over-dyeing unnecessary and helps you to attain consistency.
Gently dab the back of the photocopy, especially the area over the image. Continue to rub firmly but gently until the acetone starts to dry. Carefully lift a corner of the paper to see if the ink has transferred to the metaL then lift the paper to reveal the full image (photo 3). Troubleshooting: Using too much acetone can cause an image to smudge and can block the pores of the anodic film, preventing them from accepting a new dye. If this happens, use less acetone, or let the cotton ball dry slightly before applying it to the photocopy.
