In Toot and Puddle: You are my Sunshine, Puddle goes to great lengths to try to cheer up his friend Toot. The 4 year old who is “tattling” on another child is saying, “We need your help.” The 3 year old who is climbing up the slide is saying, “Help me learn to use this.” The 4 year old who throws a soccer ball over the fence is saying, “I’m frustrated.” The child running around the room is saying, “Help me find someone to play with.” This makes you less likely to become frustrated or overwhelmed.

Change the end action to match the emotion. Instead of “all fall down”, for angry say “take a deep breath” or for excited say, “all shout HOORAY!” At the end of the day, have a debriefing session when each child gets to express an emotion they had during the day. My husband says it's not a problem, there's nothing we can do, our son will change if he needs to or wants to. Also, remember that not every autistic person feels compelled to form close friendships.
